What drives the Surfrider Foundation

We love the ocean – and we know: healthy seas need people who stand up for them.

Our vision is a world where clean, thriving oceans and coastlines are the norm. We pursue that vision with passion and persistence: we shine a light on environmental issues, gather valuable data through citizen science, raise awareness, and inspire people to take action.

Because change begins where people get involved. That's why we create opportunities for everyone to participate – through local volunteer groups, beach cleanups, education programs, and other campaigns.

We believe in the power of an engaged community: people who don't look away, but roll up their sleeves. Knowledge that makes change possible. And countless small and large actions that add up to something bigger.

Our driving force? A future where we don't just love the ocean – we protect it.

What's ahead at Surfrider Foundation

2027 is all about Retrace! for us: together with volunteers, we make visible where litter in our waterways comes from. Using citizen science, we collect and analyze waste according to a standardized European methodology – building a strong data foundation for lasting change.

At the same time, we are active at two locations in OSPAR monitoring, making a concrete contribution to protecting the Northeast Atlantic.

We're also taking a closer look at the water quality of our rivers and streams: through various testing methods, we assess their ecological health and identify pollution – from chemical parameters to biodiversity.

But it's not just about data – above all, it's about people: we want our volunteer network to keep growing! We're always looking for motivated individuals who want to observe, test, get involved, and make a difference alongside us – for clean waterways and thriving seas.

How you can get active with Surfrider Foundation

At Surfrider, there are many ways to get involved – on the ground, as part of a team, or with your own skills. Everyone can take part!

Join one of our volunteer groups, organize beach cleanups, support environmental campaigns, or help out at events and activities. You decide how much time you want to contribute and what suits you best.

Your skills are also in demand: whether it's science, IT, photography, social media, translation, or organization – we welcome anyone who wants to put their talents to work for the protection of our waterways. And much of it can be done from home.
